Victorian shutters give us a preview of the type of architecture present during the Victorian era or the time of Queen Victoria, from 1830 up to the start of the 20th century. Victorian architecture is mainly inspired by the Gothic and Medieval architecture which is primarily revived during the era.

One key addition to this era is the use of steel. Steel frames are now use for buildings and houses to give it a more stable and solid design. Shutters during these times became somewhat similar to those of the medieval period. Shutters during this period have artistic design and is composed of louvers.

Louvers allow air flow and limit the flow of sunlight from entering the house. Louvers are shutters with horizontal slants that regulate entry of rainwater, light and noise, it is sometimes adjustable depending on the preferred angle of the homeowner. Louvers have its roots during the Middle Ages, which is the inspiration of the Victorian style architecture.

It can also be adjustable and closed the same way as the shutters that could be found on the windows. Louvers is a key feature of the Victorian shutter, its adjustable design gives convenience to homeowners and prevents outside disturbances from doing damages on windows and homes.

Victorian shutters are usually made of pine wood, which belongs to the category of softwood. Shutters like these could simply be used as shades for homes or offices. It could be found on windows of British style or classical British homes not just in Great Britain but also in its former colonies like Australia and New Zealand.

Having shutters like these would give an attractive view to passersby especially if it fits your windows perfectly and your entire house as well. It can also be attractive to those who are fascinated by old fashioned architecture like those of the Victorian era. Victorian shutters are now mostly hand painted and comes in different colors like white, green, blue, turquoise, red or simply the color of the light wood.

Victorian shutters are now the common window shutters used in houses that have their designs inspired from the Victorian architecture. They do not just protect windows from outside elements and houses but also provides beauty to homes because of its artistic design that makes homes look like a classical home from the past. It also gives convenience because of its adjustable slides. It regulates sunlight and airflow to prevent too much heat during the summer time. And, it is considered a shield from too much cold come winter time. Louvers on the Victorian shutters could be seen as a design or a technical device that can be useful to control sunlight and wind,. However, most people found it as part of aesthetic effects for buildings and homes that can also be used in facades of buildings and even in the roofs of some homes.
